R is for Reading

One of the most common pieces of advice most writers receive is to never stop reading. Read in your genre, read books about the craft, read books that interest you.

I read a lot. I drive my husband a little crazy because I can read while he watches TV. He will ask me if I saw something on the TV and then gives me the look (you know the one I’m talking about) when several minutes after he asked the question that it sinks into my brain and I look up and say “What?”

I read mostly on my Kindle now days, but I sill enjoy physical books. My Kindle has made it easier in the sense that I can carry multiple books with me at a time and never find myself without one. Plus our library here has a great selection that I can borrow and download.

I don’t have a specific genre that I stick to reading. I read whatever sounds interesting whether it’s a children’s picture book, a young adult book, a romance, or nonfiction. If it is of interest to me I will read it.

Here is what I’m currently reading:

  • On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stepehen King
  • A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess
  • Just one Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor

Of course, my TBR pile is stacked high plus I have a list I carry on my phone of books I’m interested in reading. Now to find the right balance of time between writing and reading….that is always the challenge.

What book are you reading right now?
