“What if achieving your dream meant losing everything else that mattered?”
Technically considered the first book in the Stonegate Series, Objects in Mirror, follows the prequel Catch Rider. The series focuses on different characters at the Stonegate Riding stables.
Fifteen-year-old Grace is always hungry. Everything is a number: how much weight did she lose today, how many miles did she run, how many calories did she take in today. She focuses on every bite she considers but doesn’t put in her mouth. The only thing that keeps her going is the horses, starting with the fiery, nearly out of control jumper, Sprite. When Sprite is sold at the start of summer, Grace thinks it may be all over. And then an offer she can’t refuse comes to her.
Drew, Stonegate’s trainer, offers her two options. He will pull one of his horses out of retirement, and she can ride him; however, that means no jumping. Or she can work for the stables and help work horses (including Sprite, who is still at the barn), and show horses to potential buyers. Grace considers the options and decides her best option is to work at the stables. And alongside, the gorgeous Matt.
But that’s not the only thing hanging over her head. Grace’s overbearing father threatens to rip her from her loving stepmother. One more pressure sending her spiraling.
Will Grace continue down to the rock bottom? Or will she find the courage to rise?
I really enjoyed this book, even though it touches on some difficult topics—particularly anorexia and the pressures within the equestrian world.
Tudor has a gift for telling a genuine, heartfelt story that thoughtfully captures the many layers of life at the barn.
